OSZ TIEM, BERLIN, Germany

Didactical path:

FREEDOM OF THOUGHT, EXPRESSION AND INFORMATION

FREEDOM OF CONSCIENCE AND RELIGION

Subject: Religion / Ethics

These subjects are not part of the curriculum of Berlin’s grammar schools on the level that we are teaching, because in Berlin they are only taught up to and including year 10, when the students do their GCSE exams. After 10 years of education at different other schools the students come to our school for the final three years of grammar school, at the end of which they pass their A-levels, which enable them to go to university.

From the 1st until the 10th year of school the parents are free to choose if they want their children to be educated in the subject of Religion or not. The subject of Ethics, however, was introduced as obligatory for all students. This has been the situation for about two years. The Berlin inhabitants were asked in a referendum if they agreed to this system or not, after a movement called “ProReli” had challenged the senate`s decision. They wanted the parents to choose between either Ethics or Religion as compulsory subjects, but they were not successful.
