Film review

Original title ‘ Popiełuszko . Wolność jest w nas.’-   ‘Popiełuszko. Freedom is within us’

On 24th March 2009 students from Zespół Szkół nr 2 w Dębicy went to the cinema to watch a film               ‘Popiełuszko. Freedom is within us’.

The director as well as screenwriter Rafał Wieczyński  created the film based on real facts taken from Popiełuszko’s life. The film depicts a very difficult life and striving for freedom by Popiełuszko. Many of us didn’t realize how Poland looked like in the past. For the priest the most essential was the life and freedom of people. He was able to sacrifice his own life for the people.

At the beginning of the film we can see a small Jerzy with his father. The father observes secretly  the tragic lot of Polish people. As the time goes by Jerzy realizes how important the God is in his life and the common good. He follows his own conscience what is the cause of many troubles. His life is in danger but he consciously gives up the opportunity to study in Rome. He stays in Poland to fight. The sequence of events leads to his death.

The actor Adam Woronowicz plays the role of Father Popiełuszko. The cast is really great, Marek Frąckowiak, Zbigniew Zamachowski, Maja Komorowska play in the film.

The stage design presented different period of time which we could notice. We sometimes need to compare different worlds from different times, even 30 years ago. It shows us how everything has been changing.

The music emphasized the characteristic of a scene and the costumes brought us back to a different period of time.

The title of the film ‘Popiełuszko. Freedom is within us’ makes us listen to ourselves not others, and follow our own conscience as it did Father Popiełuszko. There is a free man in everyone, because without it we wouldn’t be able to overcome so many obstacles. Many people suffered because of the lack of self confidence and the lack of the faith in Polish people. Thanks to such people as Father Popiełuszko we won.

I think that this film is really worth watching even though there are people who don’t like it. The film impressed me a lot and I think there should be more films about ‘great’ people.
