A Secondary School Competition
„Herbert? Who’s Herbert?”
On 12th
of December 2008 a group of students of Zespół Szkół Nr 2 in
Dębica took part in a competition about life and works of a Polish poet
Zbigniew Herbert who in the communist period fought for the right of freedom of
expression.
The
competition was organised by the district authorities for secondary school
students within the framework of Herbert’s Year, announced to commemorate 10th
anniversary of his death.
The
competition consisted of two stages. In the first one, the students had to
prove the knowledge of poet’s life. In the second, more difficult one, not only
did they present factual knowledge but they also showed the ability to interpret
poet’s works.
One of the
students of our school won the competition, presenting wide knowledge of poet’s
works and life and deep sensitivity to ethical and philosophical problems.
